Act 1
The wife has waited, living in poverty for 15 years, for her husband’s return. Her neighbour wants to marry her, but she still holds out for her beloved husband’s return. At last the husband, now much changed, arrives home, but at first no-one recognises him.Act 2
To find out the situation at home the husband pretends to his wife that he is her husband’s wealthy best friend and that her husband, now stony broke, is returning home the following day. He asks if he may sleep outside the house. The wife agrees.Act 3
She has seen the sailor’s riches and in the night, tormented by thoughts of her husband’s destitution, she kills the sailor for his money – kills her own husband.A Note
Milhaud sought to abandon what he perceived to be the overblown emotions and preposterous stories of Grand Opera and to create a simpler, more direct and involving form of music drama.Trial by Jury
